“Old Faithful” is the world’s best known geyser.
Located in Yellowstone National Park, it is the most predictable
geographical feature on Earth erupting every 60-90 minutes.
Eruptions can shoot 3,700 to 8,400 gallons of boiling water to a
height of 185 feet and last from 2 to 5 minutes.
“Old Faithful” personifies regularity, consistency and dependability.
In fact, it has been said that “Old Faithful” is so consistent and
dependable that you can set your clock by it, and that is why it
serves as the perfect metaphor for this message.
THE POWER OF CONSISTENCY
Consistency, or what I prefer to call, “Old Faithful” is about
delivering results which are absent of contradictions.
While variety may be the spice of life, consistency, dependability,
and regularity are the critical aspects of success in EVERY field
or endeavor.
Being consistent and faithful in your efforts not only saves you
time by helping to simplify and focus your efforts, but more
importantly, it helps you to set and routinely meet the
expectations you have of yourself, and that others have of you.
This equates to a positive impact on bottom-line results.
Here are several examples of how a consistent, “Old Faithful”
approach can maximize your performance and accelerate the rate at
which you achieve any goal:
■ Consistently show up on time.
■ Consistently deliver excellent work.
■ Consistently meet or exceed quota.
■ Consistently invest your money wisely.
■ Consistently honor your product promises.
■ Consistently work out and eat the right foods.
■ Consistently pursue your passion and purpose.
■ Consistently tell the truth and do the right thing.
■ Consistently follow through on your commitments.
■ Consistently go the extra mile for your customers.
■ Consistently acknowledge the good work of others.
■ Consistently make everything you say, think, and do count.
■ Consistently take action, and demonstrate personal
accountability.
Consistency is great for many reasons, but the most important
reason is because people like predictability-not surprises.
Family, friends, coworkers, and customers feel comfortable when
they can rely on you to do exactly what they think you will do and
have done in the past.
We have a strong preference for consistency and dependability in
our lives. We want things to work the same way every time they
happen.
When we wake up in the morning, we want to find the floor under our
feet, the sun above our heads, and coffee in our cups.
Just as we expect these kinds of physical consistencies and
dependability’s, we also expect their psychological attributes.
If we had marriages, families, and jobs yesterday, we expect to
find them today in pretty much the same condition.
Thus, we have “mental worlds” of our expectancies about
the world and the people in them that define our relationships.
The glue that holds all of these mental relationships together is
consistency-“Old Faithful”.
Why should we expect our spouses to love us tomorrow? Because that
behavior is consistent with their behavior today.
A FEW THOUGHTS ON INCONSISTENCY
Also located in Yellowstone National Park is the world’s
tallest geyser; Steamboat Geyser.
Steamboat Geyser is spectacular as when it does erupt, it does so
for hours at a time and shoots water as high as 380 feet in the air.
The problem however is that it has a reputation for being
irregular, inconsistent and undependable. It has extended periods
or dormancy, sometimes lasting for decades.
It’s should not be a mystery as to why millions of tourists go
out of their way each year to see Old Faithful when they visit
Yellowstone, but don’t bother going to see Steamboat.
This lack of consistency and predictability gives Steamboat Geyser
a lot of disadvantages.
Nobody can plan around it. You might show up wanting to see it
erupt, then have to wait for days, weeks, or even years until it
surprises you and performs again.
Like I said earlier, consistency is great for many reasons, but the
most important reason is because people like predictability-not
surprises.
Consistency counts – especially when it comes to results. No
one-hit wonders, or unpredictability allowed, as you only get a
lifetime achievement award by building a lifetime body of results.
Be consistently great, and develop a reputation of being “Old
Faithful”.
Everything Counts!
